The paper used to make corrugated cardboard boxes can be classified into two types: linerboard and corrugating medium.
Linerboard: This is the flat paper that makes up the outer layers of corrugated cardboard. Linerboard can be classified into two categories:
- Kraft linerboard: This is made from virgin wood pulp and has high strength and stiffness. It is commonly used for high-end packaging applications and is often used in food packaging.
- Test linerboard: This is made from recycled paper and is less expensive than kraft linerboard. It is commonly used for corrugated boxes that do not require high strength, such as shipping boxes.
Corrugating medium: This is the fluted paper that is sandwiched between the linerboard to make corrugated cardboard. Corrugating medium can be classified into three categories:
- Single-face: This consists of one layer of fluted paper glued to one flat sheet of linerboard. Single-face corrugated cardboard is often used for wrapping or cushioning products.
- Double-face: This consists of one layer of fluted paper glued between two flat sheets of linerboard. Double-face corrugated cardboard is commonly used for shipping boxes.
- Triple-wall: This consists of three layers of fluted paper glued between four layers of linerboard. Triple-wall corrugated cardboard is used for shipping heavy or fragile products.
The specific types of paper used to make corrugated cardboard boxes will depend on the intended use of the box and the requirements of the customer.
